when unpolarized light pass through first nicol prism , then the intensity of emerging light :-

= Io / 2 .

now light of intensity Io/2 false on second nicol prism at an angle of 60 degree therefore ,intensity

= Io/2 (cos 60 ° )^2

= Io/2 × (1/2)^2

= Io / 8
