in anaerobic respiration its the incomplete breakdown of glucose and much less energy is released which causes an oxygen debt in the body .
lactic acid builds up in the muscles which can lead to muscle cramps because not enough energy is being released for the lactic acid to be oxidised to carbon dioxide and water
