POEM ANALYSIS
To me this poem is telling about someone who guides the poet (line 1) , in saying a heavy hand perhaps a strong or stern influence. He trains his mind to believe that he has no true feelings or voice. In the next stanza he addresses that woman has no opinion. Women are clams closed mouths and without movement who appear to be jealous of those who can speak which is referred to as dancing in this writing. Next he used word to dip[ict how there is no turning back, they must submit (line 9) to higher authority, and train their mind to believe what they say, not what is right. Being broken down to the weakest point he is now ashamed and wishes to hide from any further influences (lines 16 & 17). ( The powerful hand is the French). This movement fits the category because it shows how the influence of different types of people can break you down to a point lower than you thought you could ever sink, it is important to voice your opinion the tone of the poem is subtle but very informative. The french in this time movement were very influential to the African Americans especially the poets who were moved by this struggle and voiced their opinion through literature because it was one of the only ways they could.
