The distribution of the railway network in India has been largely influenced by physiographic and economic factors. The regions of Railway Networks in India are :
1) The Northern Plains - The Northern plains is an ideal region for railway networks as it has:
a) vast land
b) high population density
c) rich agricultural sources (which call for transportation)

2)The Hilly Terrains- Also somehow favourable for the railway paths as they have :
a) low hills
b)gaps or tunnels which can be constructed

3)The Himalayas- Highly unsuitable for the constructions of railways because of :
a)High relief
b) sparse population
c) lack of economic opportunities (less employment)

4)Sandy plains of Western Rajasthan - Not a good region because of occurrence of sandstorms and also not a good surface for the construction of railways

5)Swamps Of Gujarat- Too moist for the construction of railway tracks.

6)Forested area of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand -
A region full of nexalites and dense forest cover.

Thus, there is a huge influence of physical factors in the distribution pattern of the railway networks in the country.

Major factors are as follows :

1). The northern plain with their vast level , high population density and rich agricultural resources provide the most favourable condition for growth of railways.

2). In the hilly terrain of the peninsula region, railway tracks were laid through low hils, natural passes gaps and tunnels in high mountains.

3). The himalayan mountain region is unfavourable for the construction of railway lines due to high relief.
