There are no general pros and cons of multipurpose river valley projects. Each project has to be evaluated on its own merits and demerits. The positive aspects are: savings in the form of avoidance of loss of property, lives of human being, livestock, crops by averting floods, gains in agricultural production and productivity because of better irrigation, electricity generation, protection of forests and protection from soil erosion. The negative aspects include adverse impact of release of water from over flowing dams in the hinterland, the displacement of persons evicted from the construction areas of the dam, inadequate provision for rehabilitation of displaced societies and loss of their livelihood, the cost of construction and maitenance of dams, especially if these are managed inefficiently by the private sector.
The main focus of any muti-purpose river valley project is flood control, irrigation, generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, eco-conservation and afforestation, as well as job creation for the socio-economic well being of the people residing in and around areas affected by the projects. However, over the past few decades, power generation has gained because of the demand for electricity/power.

Jawaharlal Nehru, prime minister of India, Dr. B.C.Roy, chief minister of West Bengal and Sri Krishna Sinha, chief minister of Bihar, took personal interest to ensure early success of the project.
