Gandhiji called it off because nobody understood his ideals properly ,he meant not to cooperate but the people gave an offensive tone to it started attacking British institutions and offices

This happened in February, 1922 because of an incident in Chauri-Chaura, a district in Gorakhpur. The police beat up volunteers peacefully picketing a liquor shop. The peasants in the village protested against this. The police started firing. The peasants were infuriated with this and burnt a nearby police station which killed 22 policemen. Gandhiji called the movement off as he was a believer in Non-violence and the movement took a violent route
