The occupational structure of an economy consists of —
a. The Primary Sector : agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, etc.
b. The Secondary Sector : manufacturing and construction activities.
c. The Tertiary Sector : transport, communication, trade, etc.

The primary sector is the prime source of employment for the majority of the Indian population — i.e. around 57.3 % of our total workforce.
About 17.6% and 25.1% of the total labour force is employed in the secondary and the service sector respectively.

Urbanites are largely engaged in secondary and tertiary sectors, while those in the rural areas are involved in the primary sector.

Moreover, the tertiary sector is ahead of the secondary sector as a highly popular source of employment and is equally increasing it's share in India’s GDP. Considering the sex ratio in workplaces, a higher percentage of the female population is engaged in the primary sector than in the secondary and tertiary sectors.
