It stimulates development of the maturing ovarian follicle and controls ovum production in the female, and sperm production in the male. Leutenizing hormone (LH) is also produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen and progesterone.

Icsh:ICSH. interstitial-cell stimulating hormone: a hormone produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland that, in the male, stimulates the interstitial cells of the testes to produce testosterone; chemically identical to luteinizing hormone of the female.
