The three core values and enduring ideas of non-alignment which remain relevant even after the Cold War has ended are –

•The historical affiliation of decolonised states made them natural allies whose unity was a powerful tool.

•Poor and small countries could pursue their independent foreign policy and need not become followers of other bigger powers who can exploit them.

•NAM resolved to democratize the international system by thinking about an alternative world order to redress existing inequities.

In other words. As long as any form of exploitation exist in the world, NAM would always be relevant as it would allow the smaller nations a rational, democratic, equitable and non-exploitative inter-states relation.

Four ways in which smaller states were helpful to the superpowers during the Cold War are –

•Access to vital resources as oil and mineral

•Access to territory from where the superpowers could launch their weapons and troops.

•Access to locations from where they could spy on each other.

•Economic support to pay their military expenses.

Beyond these obvious four reasons, having allies gave the cause of the superpower an ideological win in the international political arena.
