Given :-

  • %Ag = 65.03
  • %Cr = 15.68
  • %O = 19.29
  • Atomic mass of Ag = 108 g
  • Atomic mass of Cr = 52 g
  • Atomic mass of O = 16 g

Solution :-

Relative no of atoms

  • Divide the % composition of the elements with their atomic masses

\longrightarrow\mathtt{Ag = \dfrac{65.0}{ 108} = 0.6}

\longrightarrow\mathtt{Cr = \dfrac{15.68}{ 52} =0.3 }

\longrightarrow\mathtt{O = \dfrac{19.29}{ 16} = 1.2}

Simple ratio

  • Divide all the values obtained above with the least value (i.e. 0.3 in this case)

\longrightarrow\mathtt{Ag = \dfrac{0.6}{ 0.3} = 2}

\longrightarrow\mathtt{Cr = \dfrac{0.3}{ 0.3} = 1  }

\longrightarrow\mathtt{O = \dfrac{1.2}{ 0.3} = 4}

➽ Empirical formula of the compound = Ag 2 Cr O4

The simplest formula of the compound is Ag 2 Cr O4
