Dear Student,

◆ Answer -

Ni²⁺ % = 95.92 %

Ni³⁺ % = 4.08 %

● Explaination -

Given formula of nickel oxide -

Ni₀.₉₈O₁.₀₀ => Ni₉₈O₁₀₀

That is 98 Ni-atoms are present with each 100 O-atoms.

Let x be no of Ni²⁺ ions. Then Ni³⁺ ions will be 98-x.

For compound to be he neutral, total charge must be zero.

(+2)×x + (+3)×(98-x) + (-2)×100 = 0

2x + 294 - 3x - 200 = 0

94 - x = 0

x = 94

Fraction of Ni ions present as Ni²⁺ is -

Ni²⁺ % = 94/98 × 100

Ni²⁺ % = 95.92 %

Fraction of Ni ions present as Ni³⁺ is -

Ni³⁺ % = 100 - 95.92

Ni³⁺ % = 4.08 %

Hope this helps you...
