The "Prime Minister' is the "real executive authority" (de facto executive) of the country. The main powers/role of the prime minister are he/she recommends the names of members of his/her team to appoint as a Minister, determines which department will be given to which minister, presides over the the council of ministers' meeting, & controls & directs the ministers activities, among others.

Explanation:

The changing role of the "Prime Minister" of India has been mainly due to the advent of coalition form of govt. The coalition govt is formed by "an alliance" of 2 or more political parties where no single party is able to "prove" a "clear cut majority". Hence under such aspects the changing role of the Indian Prime Minister is as follows:

  1. The Prime Minister is "restrained" to take any "decision" independently. There is "political compulsion" on the "Prime Minister" to "accommodate" the interests of different political parties who are part of the Prime Minister's "coalition govt". That is, the Prime Minister is forced to consider the view points of the coalition partners
  2. When allocating the portfolio or deciding the cabinet ministers/state ministers, the Prime Minister must satisfy the wishes of all the "coalition partners"
  3. The Prime Minister must face the "challenge" of reaching a "consensus point", when formulating the "plans & policies, such that none of the coalition partner feels "neglected or offended"
