Aneuploidy is the presence of an abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell, for example a human cell having 45 or 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. It does not include a difference of one or more complete sets of chromosomes.

Aneuploidy:

Aneuploidy is defined as condition of the chromosome number where the chromosome number in an organism differs from that of the original species.

Aneuploidy can be of two types – hypoploidy and hyperploidy.

  • Hypoploidy is the condition where the chromosome number in individual is less than the original species and is expressed as 2n - x, where x can be numbered like 1, 2, etc.
  • Hyperploidy is the condition where the chromosome number in the individual is more than the original species and is expressed as 2n + x, where x can be numbered like 1, 2, etc.
