Anil plays a major role in the transformation of Hari Singh. Anil was a struggling writer who became friends with Hari Singh. He gave him shelter and education. On the other hand, Hari Singh planned evil against him and stole money from him. For Hari Singh, Anil was an easy target. Anil gave full opportunity to Hari Singh to transform himself. He helped him to gain a life of respect. Hari Singh's inner voice stopped him from committing evil activities. He got back to Anil so that he can achieve a life of respect. Hari Singh was able to transform himself only because of the love and respect which Anil gave him.

Anil comes across as a benevolent and generous human being in the story ‘The Thief’ He was kind enough to give Hari Singh shelter at his home although he did not have any fixed source of income. Anil was wise and believed in transforming Hari Singh’s ways of leading life.
Anil decided not to hand over Hari Singh to the Police because he knew that would have resulted in retaliation from Hari Singh and he would have continued the same job. However, he aimed at building trust and wished to empower him through education. He gave him work and offered to teach him which show his prudence and compassionate heart.
When Hari Singh went away with the money he decided to come back on his own which was the real victory of Anil. He was able to touch Hari Singh’s conscience who mended his ways, thus
