Direct Indirect:

\mathscr{Q}) Anil said to Sunil, "Do you like fruits?"

  • Anil asked Sunil whether he liked fruits.

Or

  • Anil asked Sunil if he liked fruits.

Here, Anil is asking Sunil a question, so Reporting verb would changed to Asked. And then remove the inverted commas and used Whether/If for joining the dialogue.

Grammar bites:

For Interrogative sentences, Some basic rules are there for converting Direct to Indirect speech. These rules are:

  • The Reporting verbs like say, tell etc. are changed to verbs like asked, enquire etc. depending upon tense.
  • If the sentences is simple Wh questions, then they are retained in the Indirect speech also.
  • And, if the sentences are yes/no type questions or questions not having Wh words, then we use If/Whether for linking.

⚠️ Also, Don't forget !! To change the Question mark/Interrogation(?) into full stop(.)

And we are done !!
