The reaction of aniline to produce acetophenone take place in three steps.
- Aniline reacts with sodium nitrate and hydrochloric acid at 0-5°C temperature to give nitrobenzene chloride.
- Again this compound reacts with ethyl alcohol to give benzene.
- Benzene reacts with acetyl chloride with catalyst anhydrous aluminium chloride to form acetophenone.
