They depend on the sun for energy because the sun is the source of all energy on earth through the process of photosynthesis. Plants with chlorophyll are the only organisms that convert the energy from the sun into the energy that is used by all other organisms. The animals that eat plants get this energy from those plants while the animals that eat the animals that eat the plants get the energy from them. Hence it is a fact that all source of food energy is from the sun.
