Because a large number of gametes is lost while reaching to egg cell so a large number is produced so that atleast one may reach and complete fertilisation

Answer:

Animal fertilisation produces a large number of gametes because among millions of gametes many are destroyed when it is released so many are produced so that at least one should reach and fertilisation takes place.
