In First situation it is given that Annie is 8 years older than Emma .

So we will make the Equation to find her presence age with the given situation.

x = y + 8 ( Equating Both sides )

x - y = 8 ----------- (I)

In second situation -

(x - 5) + (y - 5) = 16

x + y -10 = 16

x + y = 26 ----------(II)

By Elimination method ,

Adding both equation

x - y = 8

x + y = 26
