Here, Shylock tries to convince Antonio and Bassanio that the clause about a pound of flesh in the Bond was a joke and nothing else. He explains to them that a pound of Antonio's flesh would be of no use to him. He compares the value of human flesh with mutton and beef and says that a pound of Antonio's flesh will not gain him any profit. Thus he pleads to them to trust him and convinces Antonio of his reliability.
