SODIUM METAL is very reactive . It reacts vigrously with oxygen and water. A lot of heat is generated in the reaction. It is , therefore, stored in kerosene .
Generally , non metals dont react with water though they maybe very reactive in air . such metals are stored in water .
eg : phosphorous - phosphorous is highly reactive with air ,it catches fire if its exposed to air .to prevent the contact of phosphorous with the atmospheric oxygen . it is stored in water .
