Question :

Write electronic configuration of Na⁺ and Cl⁻

Answer:

i )

Electronic configuration of Na⁺  :

Na has total number of electrons is 11. But when it denote 1 electron it has only 10 electrons.

Configuration by octet rule :

Na⁺ = 2 , 8

Configuration by Aufbau principle :

Na⁺ = 1 s² , 2 s² , 2 p⁶   or  [ Ne ]

ii ).

Electronic configuration of Cl⁻  :

Chlorine has 17 electrons but when it gain 1 more electron to gain stability . Total number of electron become 18.

Configuration by octet rule :

Cl⁻ = 2 , 8 , 8

Configuration by Aufbau principle :

Cl⁻ = 1 s² , 2 s² , 2 p⁶ , 3 s² , 3 p⁶   or  [ Ar ]

☆QUESTION ☆

● Write the electronic configuration of Na+ & Cl -.

CONCEPT :-

The electronic configuration is termed as the distribution of electrons of an atom in the orbitals. The gaining or losing of electrons from an atom is known as ion.

◇ANSWER ◇

1) Na +

Atomic Number of Na :-

• The atomic number of Sodium is 11

• The total number of electrons is 11 in the sodium atom.

Electronic configuration of Na :-

•The electronic configuration of sodium is 2, 8, 1

• We can represent the electronic configuration as 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1

Sodium-ion (Na +) :-

•In sodium-ion the Sodium atom loses one electron from the atom.

Electronic configuration of sodium ion (Na+) :-

》The electronic configuration of sodium ion becomes 2,8 on losing one electron.

》We can represent the electronic configuration as  1s2 2s2 2p6.so be wr

☆ Hence, the electronic configuration of sodium ion is  1s2 2s2 2p6.

2) Cl-

Atomic number :-

• The atomic number of chlorine is 17.

• So, the total number of electrons in chlorine atom is 17.

Electronic configuration of Cl :-

• The electronic configuration is 2,8,7.

• It is represented as 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5 .

Chlorine ion :-

In chlorine ion, the chlorine atom gains one electron to get stable configuration.

Electronic configuration of chlorine ion :-

》 The electronic configuration of Cl- becomes 2,8,8 after gaining one electron.

》 It is represented as 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 .

Hence, the electronic configuration of Cl- is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6.

=> This configuration can also be written as [Ar].
