Mr. Lamb is a character from the story on the face of it. He is shown to portray optimism and has the ability to be positive in all aspects of life,

  • He rarely complains about anything and accepts anything. Kids calling him ' lamey lamb ' and he doesn't care.
  • Through treating him as a friend he makes Derry improve his perspective. Derry's face was burnt and he was full of poor self-esteem and in every case felt humiliated.
  • Mr. Lamb is people friendly and gave Derry faith. He tried to teach Derry how to value life in every situation. He gives him examples of bees swarm, weeds in the garden, and how a man who was afraid of death had locked himself up in a room and died there in the end. Mr. Lamb was showing Derry that animosity is worse than fire.
  • He also advised Derry that there was more to inner beauty than presence. At the end of the story we see the transformation of Derry, when he defies his mother and returns to the garden of Mr. Lamb.
