While the Bama were subjected to caste discrimination and untouchability, the Zitkala-Sa were victims of racial prejudice. Zitkala-Sa was taken to a European missionary school where she was looked down upon as a local tribe. Her expensive, long, heavy hair, which was her pride, was covered with shingles. She tried her best to resist, but was finally forced to give up her fight. Bama, who had witnessed the unfair practice of untouchability, on the other hand decided to erase caste differences through the light of education. Under the guidance and supervision of her older brother, she judiciously used her anger and sense of rebellion to study hard and outwit any form of prejudice. She understood that social change would only be possible if these so-called lower castes made an effort to study and thereby progress.

It is easy to notice that although both protagonists tried to protest against the injustice they faced, the paths they chose are significantly different. Through this path of rebellion, Zitkala-Sa is forced to surrender, while Bama successfully implements her brother's advice to finally reach the top of her class. While Zitkala-Sa continued to rebel and criticize the evils of racial prejudice through her works, Bama opted for a more subtle way of delivering her silent but effective demonstration.
