It was the time when Helen felt her soul sudden awakening. She explored everything with her hands and learns the name of every object that she touched. It opened up a wonderful world for her. The more she explored, the happier and confident she grew with rest of the world. She learns how the sun and rain grow out of the ground. She experienced the two aspects of the nature. She could understand the joy of nature. She came very close to nature and had nice thoughts and sweet dreams under the tree of paradise. Ms. Sullivan unfolded the beauty of nature for Helen with the passage of time. She took her to the bank of the Tennessee River. There she had her first lesson in the beneficence of nature, i.e., how every tree is pleasant to the sight and good for food; how birds build their nests. She could now appreciate how the squirrel, the deer, the lion and every other could find food and shelter. Miss Sullivan helped her in understanding the mysteries of nature.

Helen had great love for mischief as, one day she put her wet apron over hot ashes. She made a terrified noise and was rescued by her old nurse, Vinny. Helen learns the lesson of safety. She once locked up her mother in the pantry for three hours. In order to teach her, her parents appointed a teacher, Ms. Sullivan, but Helen sought an opportunity and locked her in the room. Then she hid the key under a wardrobe in the hall and her father had to get a ladder to take Ms. Sullivan out through the window. She was delighted by that. It made her to learn how to find out the way to get out of trouble.

Living through the fears of war was a terrible thing. All the residents got tired of the atmosphere of horror all the time. With the result, they didn't dare open their mouths except at meal time because no matter whatever one of them said, somebody was bound to feel resentment or take it the wrong way. Even Anne had to fight the anxiety and depression that was settling into her life. They had almost forgotten how to laugh. It disturbed her and made her cry. She used to get upset due to the horrible words, mocking looks and accusation which Mrs. Van Daan repeatedly leveled on her. She wanted to shout at them and tell them to let her sleep even for a day without wetting her pillow with tears but she couldn't. With the result, most of the times she remained silent and in despair. She wanted to tell them to leave her alone as she felt it better to be called rude as she couldn't be a hypocrite like others. In other words the differences were having their toll on Anne.

Mrs. Van Daan was a fatalist, egotistical, flirtatious, and disagreeable woman. She quarreled over petty issues and no body in the annexe got along well with her. Mrs. Van Daan frequently complained that Anne didn't admire or respect her. She was a timid lady who got frightened at the slightest noise. She didn't behave well with Mrs. Frank, Mr. Dussel and even Peter. She was always ready to pick up a fight. On September 2, 1942 she had a quarrel with Mrs. Frank as she had found out that the Franks were using her China instead of their own. She got annoyed with Anne when she broke one of her soup bowls. All these incidents point towards Mrs. Van Daan being short-tempered. She seemed a 'born debater' to Anne. In the later stage of her hiding, she became uncomfortable during her hiding and gave vent to her feelings by frequently hitting others with her speech. Mrs. Van Daan did not survive the war like all others.
