Jerome, George and Harris, sat around discussing their ailments. Then, he went through a medical book and discovered treatment, he had symptoms of almost all the diseases except housemaid’s knee for that she went to a doctor. Who despite prescribing him medicines, prescribed him a pound of beefsteak and pint of beer. For his treatment, Jerome considered his liver to be out of order and felt that to be the cause of his current illness. Harris and George felt that they had ‘fits of giddiness’ going. All the three were going through a state called hypochondria. None of them was sure as to what actually was wrong with them. They somehow figured out that they were overworked and needed ‘‘rest and a complete change,’’ for which they planned out their sea voyage. Their ailments were just out of their thinking as they were not really ill. Their idea of ailments was just to avoid over working.

Montmorency though was a dog, yet the author deals in detail with his character. He had a very troublesome ambition in life to get in the way and to be sworn at. He loved to be a perfect nuisance, to make people mad and have things thrown at his head. The highest ambition of his life was to be cursed for hours for being the most irritating. He felt conceited if successful at making others lose their nerves. He caused much trouble at the time of packing–he put his leg into the jam and spoiled three lemons. He was a born trouble shooter and he did not need any encouragement for causing troubles to others. He also adds a lot of humour to the story. He didn't relish the boat expedition as there was little scope for action. When Montmorency came to live with the author, he thinks that he would not live too long. By the end of the year, his opinion changed. He had killed twelve chickens and had to be saved from street fights. In fact, once a woman brought a dead cat and calls the author a murderer. Finally, the author changes his ideas about the dog when saved by the dog.
