Sentence Pattern:

There are different parts in a sentence such as

Subject (S)

Verb(V)

Complement(C)

Adverbial(A)

Direct Object(DO)

Indirect Object(IO)

1.Subject(s)-The person or thing about which a statement is made is called the subject of the sentence.

2.Verb(v)-The word that indicates an action done by a subject is called the verb.

3.Complement(c)-The words required to complete the meaning of the sentence are called complement of the sentence.

4.Adverbial(A)-An adverbial is an adverb clause, adverb phrase or noun phrase or prepositional phrase. The adverbial tells us more about the action of situation. It gives answers to How,When or Where.Adverbials are also called Adjuncts.

5.Object(o)-The noun towards which the action of a verb is directed is called the object of the sentence.

6.Direct Object(DO) and Indirect Object(IO)

My uncle gave me a gift.

This sentence has two objects -"me" and "gift".

The action of the verb (gave) is directed to the phrase 'a gift'.So it is called Direct Object (DO).

The action of the verb is not directed towards

'me'.It is called Indirect Object(IO).

*Usually Direct Objects answer the questions-"What"

*The Indirect Object answers the question-"Who".
