(7)

Let, the age of Jacob is x years and that of his son is y years

By the given conditions,

x + 5 = 3 (y + 5)

⇒ x + 5 = 3y + 15

⇒ x = 3y + 10 .....(i)

x - 5 = 7 (y - 5)

⇒ 3y + 10 - 5 = 7y - 35 [ by (i) ]

⇒ 3y + 5 = 7y - 35

⇒ 7y - 3y = 5 + 35

⇒ 4y = 40

y = 10

Putting y = 10 in (i), we get

x = 3 (10) + 10

⇒ x = 30 + 10

x = 40

Therefore, the present age of Jacob is 40 years and that of his son is 10 years.

(8)

Let, the present age of Nuri is x years and that of Sonu is y years

By the given conditions,

x - 5 = 3 (y - 5)

⇒ x - 5 = 3y - 15

⇒ x = 3y - 10 .....(i)

x + 10 = 2 (y + 10)

⇒ 3y - 10 + 10 = 2y + 20 [ by (i) ]

⇒ 3y - 2y = 20

y = 20

Putting y = 20 in (i), we get

x = 3 (20) - 10

⇒ x = 60 - 10

x = 50

Therefore, the present age of Nuri is 50 years and that of Sonu is 20 years.

Answer

7) Let the present age of Jacob and son be = x, y respectively

---After 5 years---

x + 5 = 3 ( y + 5 )

=> x = 3y + 10

---Before 5 years---

x - 5 = 7 ( y - 5 )

=> x = 7y - 30

Equating the bold equations, we get:

=> 3y + 10 = 7y - 30

=> 4y = 30

=> y = 10

Then, x = 40

8) Let the present age of Nuri and Sonu be = x, y respectively

---Before 5 years---

x - 5 = 3 ( y - 5 )

=> x = 3y - 10

---After 10 years---

x + 10 = 2( y + 10 )

=> x = 2y + 10

Equating the bold equations, we get:

=> 3y - 10 = 2y + 10

=> y = 20

Then, x = 50
