Answer:

During the summer season in India (March to May) the sun is vertically above the tropic of cancer. Because of this the Indian subcontinent receives vertical sun rays. The land gets heated up fast and therefore a low pressure area is created. On the other hand, there is a high pressure area in the Indian ocean at this time. Because of this pressure gradient, the winds travel from the Indian ocean towards the Indian subcontinent. While they travel over the ocean, these winds pick up moisture and cause rainfall in India. As these winds enter India from South-West, they are known as South-West Monsoon Winds.
