Qutb ud-din Aibak was the founder of the slave dynasty. The slave dynasty was also called Mamluks sultans. Mamluk in araibic means 'owned'. Iltutamish and Balban were slaves of Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who himself was a slave of Muhammad Ghori.

Aibak was the first Muslim Sultanate ruler in northern India. The dynasty he established is known as the Slave Dynasty or the Mamluk Dynasty. He built mosques in Delhi and other areas. He was known as a generous king in times of peace and was honoured with the title Lakhbaksh.Iltutmish was sold into slavery but married the daughter of his master, Quṭb al-Dīn Aibak, whom he succeeded in 1211. He strengthened and expanded the Muslim empire in northern India and moved the capital to Delhi, where he built the great victory tower, the Quṭb Mīnār.Razia Sultana was the first woman Sultanate of India, and ruled the court of Delhi from the end of 1236 to 1240. The only ever woman to do so, she defied all odds to occupy the throne, including overcoming conflicts over her gender and her slave ancestry.
