At first I suppose it's both Antonio and Bassanio as without him it would not possible for prodigal Bassanio to have lent on money from the Jew. Later in Trial Scene it shows of how Portia in disguise helped Antonio and saved him from clutches of Shylock. Portia came to save Antonio by her intelligence since he was a bossom friend of her husband. Thus the life of Antonio was saved under trial circumstances.
Antonio who was entrapped by meshes became almost cripple and saved ultimately by Bassanio's wife. Though no doubt if Antonio wouldn't have arranged of money that to be given to his friend, the illustration of Act 3 SC 2 would not be possible. Hence the life of Antonio perhaps proved to be futile. Thus the bond story of Antonio and Bassanio is more remarkable than Bassanio and Portia's relationship.
