1. Cell is the basic, structural and functional unit of life or any living organism. Every organism in the universe is made up of cells and they are also known as the building units of life.

Cells are at the lowest level of the organization since they are the basic units. They consist of organ-like structures within them which carry out different functions within the cell. They are known as cell organelles.

2. We have two types of organisms based on the number of cells present. They are -:

  • Unicellular Organisms → Unicellular Organisms are those organisms that consist of only one cell that is responsible for carrying out all the basic functions of life.
  • For Example → Amoeba, Bacteria, Yeast, etc.

  • Multicellular Organisms → Multicellular Organisms are those organisms that consist of two or more cells that have different shapes (mostly spherical) and are found in different parts of the body, performing different functions.
  • For Example → Plants, Animals, etc.

What are cells ?

Cell :-

  • The cell was first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665.
  • A cell is defined as the smallest, basic unit of life that is responsible for all of life's processes.
  • Cells are made up of components called cell organelles.

❷ Difference between unicellular and multicellular cells ?

Unicellular Cells :-

  • It’s a cellular organism with internal units all accumulated into a single cell.
  • It gives very less efficiency.
  • Irregular formation in structure.
  • Both Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes.
  • Example :- Amoeba, Paramecium, Plasmodium, Yeast, Algae etc.

Multicellular Cells :-

  • It’s a cellular organism with internal units all taken up by groups of cells assigned to different specialized functions.
  • They provide a high level of efficiency.
  • Structure is well defined.
  • Only in the form of Eukaryotes.
  • Example :- Vertebrates, Invertebrates, gymnosperms, angiosperms etc.
