Okay , here is what the answer to finding "a" in that question is .

Let us assume that the line you drew were parallel to the other 2 lines.
Now , by the property that the angle formed between the parallels is supplimentary angle ,
We have angle a = (180 - 50) + (180 - 40 )
So we have a = 130 + 140 = 270 .
Now we know that angle around a point is 360.
So b = 360 - a = 360 - 270 = 90

So (your answer is correct) , a = 270 and b = 90
