She began to make crude signs. A shake of the head meant 'no' and a nod meant 'yes', a pull meant 'come', and a push meant 'go'. Then she could imitate the acts of cutting the slices and buttering them. If she wanted her mother to make ice-cream for dinner she made the sign for working the freezer and shivered, indicating cold. Soon she realised that she is different from others.
