Answer: Assuming that this a electromagnetic iron rod which when switched on the battery the electricity runs over the rod making it charged and attracting magnetic substance as iron itself is magnetic when switched off the curent stops flowing making it uncharged and losing its magnetic field thus the magnetic pieces are not attracted anymore.Hope this helps you
