According to alfred wegener the forces behind the drifting of the continents were the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the earth and astromical precession.

1)centrifugal force occurs when a body is rotating around a fixed axis and it tries to move the body away from this axis.Wegener thought that maybe due to the centrifugal force of the earth the continents drifted apart but we now know that he was wrong in that assumption because the centrifugal force due to earths rotation is not enough to take continents apart.

2)The second mechanism he thought for was the axial precession of the earth but alfred wegener was not sure about it and also the forces produced due to the axial precession is very small so we need not discuss it.
