A great circle can be defined as a plane which asses through the centre of a sphere.
It is also known as an orthodrome.
An orthodrome or a great circle intersects the circle from the middle and forms the shortest distance between two points of that sphere.
Taking earth as an example, whenever a plane or a ship starts its journey, it follows the path of the great circle or the orthodrome to shorten its distance and travel time.
