The map projection which is very useful for navigational purposes is the Mercator projection.

The properties of Mercator projection are as follows:

  • Mercator projection is orthomorphic because it is based on a mathematic formula.
  • This projection is also an azimuthal projection.
  • The shape of the area is maintained but it gets distorted at high altitudes.
  • Meridians and Parallels are straight lines. These lines intersect at right angles.
  • The distance between parallels increases towards the pole whereas the distance between the meridians remains equal.
  • The length of all parallels are same which is equal to the length of the equator.

The limitations of Mercator projection are as follows:

  • In Mercator projection, poles cannot be shown.
  • At high altitudes, there is a great exaggeration of scales along the parallels and meridians.

The best source used for map projection is Mercators:

Explanation:

  • Meridians and parallels are straight lines.
  • The space between meridians remain constant while the space between parallels keep on increasing
  • However, all the parallels have the same length
  • The meridians are much longer on the globe than they in reality
  • The projections are orthomorphic and can be seen on the globe easily
