let dw be the small work done in streching spring 'dx' by force 'f' then,

dw=-fdx

where f is restoring force and given by f=-kx (where k is spring constant)

so,

dw=kxdx

integrating both sides with limits at x=0, w=0 at x=y, w=u(say)

\int\limits^u_ 0{} \, dw=\int\limits^y_0 {kx} \, dx

or,u-0=1/2*k*(y²-0)

∴u=(1/2)ky²
