(i) 4 x 8 1/8 = 4 x (65/8) = 65/2 = 32 1/2

(ii) 3 x 5 2/7 = 3 x (37/7) = (111/7) = 15 6/7

A fraction is a part of a whole.

Examples-

Types of Fractions:

1) Proper Fraction- A fraction whose numerator is less than its denominator is called a proper fraction.

Example- 2/3

2) Improper Fraction- A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to denominator is called improper fraction.

Example- 2/2 and 3/2

3) Mixed Fraction- A fraction which contains a whole number as well as a fraction is called mixed fraction.

Example- 2  \frac{2}{5}

4) Unit Fraction- A fraction whose numerator is always 1 is called unit fraction.

Example- 1/12

Given question: Multiply and express the following as mixed fractions-

i) 4 × 8  \frac{1}{8}

ii) 3 × 5  \frac{2}{7}

iii) 9 × 2  \frac{4}{9}

Solution: i) 4 × 8  \frac{1}{8}

= 4 ×  \frac{65}{8}

=  \frac{65}{2}

= 32  \frac{1}{2}

ii) 3 × 5  \frac{2}{7}

= 3 ×  \frac{37}{2}

=  \frac{111}{7}

= 15  \frac{6}{7}

iii) 9 × 2  \frac{4}{9}

= 9 ×  \frac{22}{9}

= 22
