Bases are the compounds that are usually bitter to taste. Turns red litmus into blue litmus paper. Bases produces hydroxyl ions (oh-) in the solution medium which are responsible for their basicity . Bases can be either soluble in water or insoluble in water. The bases which are soluble in water are called alkalis.
