The poet hears a girl sing in the distance and is enamoured by its music. He hears the song while lying on the grass. The song seems to pass from hills to valleys. The bird to the poet is a mystery. Even as a boy, when he hear it sing, he looked for it everywhere. He wandered through the woods and hills in search of the bird. He longs to see the bird, but is happy to simply listen to her enchanted song.
