★ Question:

A piece of wire is in the shape of a rectangle whose length and breadth are 50 cm and 38 cm respectively is rebent to form a circle. Find the radius of the circle.

★ Solution:

As the same wire is used to make the circle, both the rectangle and the circle will have the same perimeter.

Formula to find perimeter of a rectangle = 2 (l + b)

Length = 50 cm

Breadth = 38 cm

Perimeter of the wire = 2 (50 + 38)

= 2 x 88

= 176 cm

Perimeter of a circle = 2πr ----- (1)

Perimeter of the given circle = 176 cm ----- (2)

Combining statements (1) and (2)

2πr = 176 cm

\sf{=2\times\dfrac{22}{7}\times\:r=176\:cm}

\sf{=\dfrac{44}{7}\times\:r=176\:cm}

\sf{r=176\times\dfrac{7}{44}}

\sf{r=4\times7}

r = 28 cm

Hence the radius of the circle is 28 cm.

★ Formulae Used:

Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 (l + b)

Perimeter of a circle = 2πr
