He walks east a total of 2 km, and south a total of 1 km. This gives a right angled triangle of sides 2 and 1.
The distance he covers is given by Pythagoras' theorem. You square the two sides and add: 2^2 + 1^2 = 4 + 1 = 5
Now take the square root: √5 = 2.236 (approx)
The displacement is 2.236 kilometres
