Antibiotics are chemical substances produced by living organisms such as bacteria and fungi, etc. which can kill or stop the growth of some pathogenic micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi. Some antibiotics used for the treatment of diseases caused by bacteria and fungi are penicilium, streptomycin, gentomycin etc.
The treatment of viral infections are more difficult than that of bacterial infection. For each type of viral infection, human body produces its own antiviral protein, called interferons which virus makes resistant to the viral infection.
(i) Why Penicilium is able to restrict the growth of bacteria?
(ii) Why does taking antibodies during common cold not reduce the severity or duration of disease?
(iii) What are interferons?
(iv) What is the purpose of dividing infectious agents into different categories?
