Antiseptics
Antiseptic is a substance that is applied to a wound to help prevent infections in the
body. Surgeries were performed successfully by surgeons. However, many patients
died after the surgery due to infections. Joseph Lister understood that the wound
itself had to be thoroughly cleaned. Even a small wound that got infected could cause
death. Long ago, people used homemade
remedies as antiseptics. These killed the
germs but also harmed the tissues, as a
result of which patients died. Lister began
cleaning surgical tools and spraying
the patient with Carbolic Acid (phenol)
during surgery. This had miraculous
results. Lister was convinced that
cleanliness in tools, the operating area
and hands were important to prevent the
spread of infection
