Answer:

ANSWER:

Antonio borrowed money to give it to Bassanio.

EXPLANATION:

Antonia was a Venetian Merchant. His friend, Bassanio was in "desperate need of money" to "court Portia", a rich heiress who lived in Belmont.

Bassanio asked Antonia to lend him money so that he can travel to Belmont. Although Antonia agreed, but he himself he did not have money. He invested all his money in the trade ships.

Hence, Antonia asked for money from his enemy Shylock to give it to Bassanio, so that he can go Balmont and woo the rich lady Portia.
