"Dwarf" is a general term for stars with smaller masses. Our Sun is termed a "yellowdwarf" and there are many stars with masses less than the Sun called "red dwarfs". Very low mass objects that do not have enough material to ignite nuclear fusion in the center are called "brown dwarfs".

A red dwarf is a main sequence star with a mass of less than half of that of the Sun. ... A white dwarf is the remnant of a star which does not have high enough core temperatures and pressures for fusion reactions to continue.
