i) they spread over an area of 7 lakh sq km.
ii) the plains are about 2400km long and about 240km broad.
iii) it is a densely populated and an intensively cultivated area.
iv) it is also agriculturally a very productive part of India.
v) the western part of the northern plains is called Punjab plain. it is formed by the Indus and its tributaries.
