any injury to medulla oblingata can cause sudden death because it controls major functions of the human body such as respiration, digestion, coughing and sneezing, regulates heart beat and relays nerve signal between brain and the spinal cord.
if any of these major functions are not carried out properly then this can cause death.

medulla oblangata controls all the involuntary functions like respiration, breathing, digestion. when it gets injured all the functions come to a stop. it means that the heart stops pummping blood, lungs stop exchange of gases etc. and all of this results in death. It controls various autonomic functions such as respiration, heart rate, blood pressure etc. When it gets damaged body will not be able to perform all these functions which will prove fatal.
